Woeste Willem

Ameland

The beach #

The Willemspad beach access is a five-minute walk from the house and is remarkably quiet even in high season. By bike you are in the centre of Nes or Buren in five to eight minutes.

Worth knowing: there is no lifeguard #

There is no lifeguard at this beach access. Supervision is only at the main beach accesses at Nes and Buren, where flags also indicate whether it is safe to swim.

So do take care, especially with small children. Watch out for rip currents: strips of water flowing back out to sea that carry you off surprisingly fast. You can recognise them as a calmer, darker strip in the surf without breaking waves. If you get caught in one, do not swim against the current — swim parallel to the shore.

Walking and cycling #

In the white box by the dining table there is a booklet from VVV Ameland with a number of beautiful walks around the island. Please put the booklet back after your stay at Woeste Willem.

About 8 km east by bike you reach the ’t Oerd nature reserve, where a beautiful circular walk of some 4 km is waymarked — with breathtaking views over the Wadden Sea, the North Sea and the dune landscape.

Bike hire #

Metz hires out bikes and, for a small extra charge, delivers them to the house on the day you arrive. We have had very good experiences with them. If you would rather cycle to Woeste Willem straight from the ferry on hire bikes, Kiewiet bike hire is the one to go to.

Eating out #

A few places we like to go ourselves.

’t KoaikersHuus #

Set in the hamlet of Kooiplaats (a beautiful nature reserve) and reached from Buren by a lovely bike ride between the meadows. Good quality, but not formal. Known for its duck dish. Extensive wine list. The owner is called Martine; do give her our regards. Booking advised.

’t Witte Paard #

In the centre of Nes. A little more formal, with white table linen. Good kitchen, excellent wines and Chateau Neubourg on tap. Like ’t KoaikersHuus, very well suited to a lovely evening out.

Stranders #

Close by in Buren. Mostly fish on the menu and very child-friendly. There is a playground and a lovely terrace. Takeaway is also available.

Bravo #

Near the beach access at Nes. Informal, known for good meat and the barbecue. Large play area for children by the terrace.

Pannenkoekenhuis Onder de Vuurtoren #

In Hollum — your reward after a lovely bike ride along the shell path between Buren and Hollum.

De Welvaart in Hollum #

A very convivial village pub in Hollum with an extensive (speciality) beer list and good food at a reasonable price.
